Strawberry is an affordable and very healthy berry that can be consumed fresh and for sweet preparations. Even after going through heat treatment, the fruits of this plant retain their nutritional properties. For cultivation on garden plots, garden strawberries have been created, the fruits of which are larger, but at the same time they practically do not differ from the forest ones in chemical composition, taste and aroma.
The garden form of strawberries is widespread, but its agricultural technique and the list of zoned varieties vary from region to region. This allows you to get generous crops everywhere: in the northern and southern latitudes, in a humid or arid climate.
Variety Selection Criteria
The choice of strawberries for central Russia is actually not as great as it seems to novice gardeners. In the Moscow region, the climate is unstable and has a small number of sunny days in the summer. At the same time, long periods of drought often occur in the middle lane. This is what affects the choice of varieties that should have the following features:
- withstand short-term frosts in the spring;
- endure prolonged rains and the absence of direct sunlight;
- resist fungal and other diseases that spread mainly in wet and cool weather;
- withstand short-term droughts.
It is important to remember that even the most productive varieties that have proven themselves, for example, in the Krasnodar Territory, may not bear fruit at all in the middle lane.

The best varieties for central Russia
From the available variety variety, it is easy to choose garden strawberries for the Moscow Region, especially if you take into account the data in the previous subsection of the tips. The most productive and resistant to weather and other conditions are considered varieties of different ripening periods: early and ultra-early, mid-ripening and even late (provided that the plantings are covered with the beginning of autumn cooling).
Of the total mass of average varieties, the most beneficial for central Russia are:

Landing and transplant dates
In the middle zone, strawberries can be transplanted to a permanent place in spring or autumn. In general, it practically does not matter when it is better to do this, however, spring and autumn plantings have their advantages. So, Autumn planting allows you to get the first, albeit a modest crop, next summer. But with spring planting, the risks of losing plants due to freezing and getting wet are reduced. In addition, plants planted in spring are stronger.
In the middle lane, landing dates depend on weather conditions. When planting in autumn, it is important to calculate the period so that young seedlings have time to take root before the onset of stable cold weather, when the temperature does not rise above +5 degrees. Thus, the best time for autumn planting of strawberries is early August.
With spring planting, everything is somewhat simpler, since you do not have to make calculations regarding rooting. May is considered the best time to organize new beds. In some cases, planting can be carried out from the end of April, but only if the beds are protected from return frosts.
How and where to plant strawberries in the middle lane
Garden strawberries are very fond of light and warmth. This should be guided when choosing a place for her. On the south side of the strawberry beds should not be tall plants and buildings, so as not to create a shadow. However, planting it “in an open field” is not recommended, since temperature stability is important for strawberries.
The soil under the plantings should be as moisture-resistant and breathable as possible. Garden strawberries will not bear fruit on untidy soils. Weed removal, deep cultivation and seasoning with organics is an important point in preparing a place for this crop.
Equally important for the yield of garden strawberries and planting scheme. It is recommended to leave at least 40 cm between the bushes and 70-80 cm between the rows. Under these growing conditions, strawberries will have enough space and nutrients for growth and generous fruiting.
Strawberry care in central Russia is not much different from agricultural technology in other regions. To provide plants with everything necessary, it is enough to regularly carry out the following procedures:
- watering - in the evening or in the morning, guided by the principle of "pour when dry";
- top dressing - in the spring, at least 4 times during the growing season (for repair varieties - after each wave) and in the fall, better with organic matter (rotted manure and infusion of mullein and / or grass);
- weed control - by the method of frequent weeding with parallel loosening of the soil or mulching with straw or rotted compost;
- pruning - excess tendrils, darkened leaves and fry shoots are removed throughout the growing season;
- control of diseases and pests - regular inspection of plants, treatment with folk remedies, biological and chemical preparations.
Every 2-3 years, strawberries need rejuvenation. In order not to "get lost" in terms, it is recommended to plant a strawberry patch in three stages:
- In the first year, a third of the plantation is planted.
- In the second year, the second third of the site is populated with young seedlings, and the first begins to bear fruit.
- In the third year, the last third of the plot is planted, the first and second bear fruit.
In autumn, plants are completely removed from the first plot; the soil "rests" for a year. It is recommended to sow the empty area with marigolds, onions or garlic, and legumes during this period. The following year, the first plot is again planted with strawberries, and the second is peeled and planted with green manure. Thus, the strawberry plantation remains healthy and young, that is, well fruiting.
